They can pick their frosting colors, and a wide variety of toppings at the cupcake table!! Sticky fingers, smiles and yummy fun are encouraged and will be had here! Special gratitude goes out to Committee members, Mimi Wielgosz, Marty Fullwood, and Ashley Batlle for organizing this activity. This activity will start at 4:00 p.m.

For years Holyoke-based Enchanted Circle Theater has inspired learning by infusing arts and education in school districts throughout the region. It weaves stories creating living history, crafts art out of science, turns poetry into performance, and awakens the spirit of creativity in children and adults.

Enchanted Circle Theater will bring its theatrical magic to the Holyoke Winter Carnival’s Luminaria at Community Field, next Friday March 1, at 6:00 p.m with larger-than-life masks, puppets and costumed creatures. The sunset timed event will begin as dusk begins to settle over Holyoke’s newest four-season park. Over 1,000 candle lit luminaries will dot the walkways of Community Field as Enchanted Circle Theater’s Creature Crawl begins its procession to open the 2013 Holyoke Winter Carnival.

Enchanted Circle Theater is the regional leader in the field of arts integration, using theater arts as a dynamic teaching tool on the stage, in the classroom, and in the community. They are a professional theater company, a teaching institution, and a community-based arts organization.

Carpe Diem, a progressive rock band from Holyoke, performed at the 2012 Holyoke Winter Carnival and returns again to demonstrate their musical talents with covers and original rock-genre material.  The band members are: Ray Cruz on Guitar, Anthony Cruz on Bass, Brandon Torres on Keyboard, and Mickey Robles on drums.

The Salvation Alley String Band is known for “Putting the Western back into Western Mass since 2006.”  They play original music influenced by honky-tonk, western swing, Bakersfield country, bluegrass, and rock and roll. Following the release of their 2010 album The Pioneer Valley Rose and Other Favorites, audiences began falling in love with the quintet’s catchy songs, guy/girl harmonies, pedal steel guitar, mandolin, and twangy guitars.  The band recently released their self-produced second album, The Space Wanderer.

 Toussaint the Liberator “Defender of Roots, Protector of Soul” is a vocalist with a wealth of versatility that will captivate any unsuspecting listener and deliver his proud message straight to the heart. His Indiana childhood spent singing gospel and performing in Mid-Western churches with his family laid a solid musical and spiritual foundation on which he continues to build. Toussaint is a dynamic independent artist with a powerful voice, a serious message, and undeniable talent. Whether performing on stage or working with youth groups, Toussaint is steady in his mission to build a community of music lovers ready for change.

Kultura Borikua Band was born in Holyoke in 2006. Boriken is the name that the Natives Indians of Puerto Rico gave to our island and our people have been called Borikuas for centuries! The Name of the band means The Culture of the people of Puerto Rico. Kultura Borikua represents the true essence of Puertorrican Music featuring Puerto Rico’s National Instrument, the Puertorrican Cuatro. “We’ve got a Family Movie Night!” Come see Ice Age: Continental Drift on Saturday, March 2, at the United Congregational Church, 395 High St., in downtown Holyoke. Show time: 7:00 p.m., Admission is free.

In this episode, Manny, Diego, and Sid embark upon another adventure after their continent is set adrift. Using an iceberg as a ship, they encounter sea creatures and battle pirates as they explore a new world. Watch movie trailer, Ice Age: Continental Drift.

Come and enjoy some popcorn and a movie on the large screen. Bring pillows, and get get comfy on a mat. Adults bring a pillow for the chair or even your own lawn chair if you like. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Holyoke Morning Fitness 

Take the time to exercise your mind, body and spirit during the Holyoke Winter Carnival weekend. Three local health and fitness organizations will be offering opportunities to explore their morning workouts on Saturday, March 2. They’re all different routines but with the same purpose – to get you moving while having fun.

Join us for an indoor rowing workout Saturday morning 7:30 – 9:00am at the Jones Ferry River Access Center boathouse, off Main Street, Holyoke. Brand new beginner to advanced rowers are welcome. Class involves basic conditioning on the ergometer as well as instruction on proper rowing technique. Take this opportunity to learn a little about rowing before signing up for one of our spring learn to row classes.

This is an ongoing program of Holyoke Rows which help members maintain fitness and form until we get back on the river. If you can’t make it to this winter carnival class, join us any Tuesday or Thursday evening 5:30 – 7:00pm or Saturday morning 7:30 – 9:00am. Free for drop in participants.

Vega Yoga

Never taken yoga or taken very little. This beginner’s class in the Hatha style introduces students to the asana (posture) practice. This class begins to explain and explore the fundamentals of yoga postures, breathing, alignment and relaxation. Our teachers provide slow and steady guidance, allowing our students to feel comfortable and confident as they build their own yoga practice. Vega Yoga will also offer a $10.00 drop-in for first time participants.

Battle of the Bridge Ice Classic

The Holyoke Winter Carnival is proud to announce the Holyoke Firefighters Hockey club will square off against the Chicopee Firefighters Hockey club in a “Battle of the Bridge” Charity Ice Classic on Sunday March 3, at 1:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The Fireman’s charity hockey game will raise money for the Holyoke Youth football team that is seeking to raise $21,000 to purchase new concussion compliant helmets.

The ice hockey friendly will feature two of the areas finest amateur teams and is the marquee event of the day. Below are rosters for the teams.

Big, Cheap, Spaghetti Dinner

The 2013 Holyoke Winter Carnival will sponsor a Spaghetti dinner on Sunday March 3, at the Holyoke Elks Lodge, 250 Whitney Ave.

If you like to dance come check out Zydeco Connection, a Greenfield-based band bringing a Cajun twist to the ‘Yoke. Funds raised will go towards paying performers and other bills incurred by the Holyoke Winter Carnival.

Tickets for the event are $8.00 each, and can be purchased at the door, or online by clicking here to Register and print tickets.

Doors open at 4:00 p.m., and the music starts at 4:30 p.m.

 The Holyoke Winter Carnival has always believed that involving the faith community in the planning of the Winter Carnival was essential to reaching out to all residents of Holyoke. Thus, before the fun begins, The Rev. Barbara Thrall and her congregation at St. Paul’s Church will welcome visitor’s to their sanctuary to reflect on Winter life in Southern New England, its changes, and how we have spiritually adapted to the season that keeps us mostly indoors.

The worship service at St. Paul’s Church, 485 Appleton Street, will take place on Sunday, February 24, at 10 a.m. The service will preview some of the planned community activities the Holyoke Winter Carnival will present, along with Bible readings, prayers, singing, sharing of the Holy Communion and blessings, with refreshments following the service. Visitors are invited to share a message of hope, inclusion and encouragement in God’s promises to us.

It may be cold outside, but in Christ’s community of believers, a warm reception awaits.
